Incidentally, I know that a lot of well-informed people are on my friends list.

If anyone can suggest a good research source/book/site/whatever for Shanghai (probably 1930s-50s) I would be most grateful.

From my First Reading, I think Stella Dong's Shanghai : The Rise and Fall of a Decadent City 1842-1949 would be useful. Checking its Amazon.com page, I see Secret War in Shanghai : An Untold Story of Espionage, Intrigue, and Treason in World War II by Bernard Wasserstein and Policing Shanghai 1927-1937 by Frederic Wakeman, Jr.

I also endorse Amazon.com's recommendation of the Lonely Planet guide to Shanghai, on the grounds that I've never run a game set in, or written a book on, a place that didn't benefit from a riffle through the relevant Lonely Planet.
