Had a really excellent day today. Jo and Rob visited, we had something of a walk round main Southampton, I showed them Read Or Die and Spirited Away and the first episode of Utena for the first time, and I cooked salmon teriyaki for supper. Oh, and Jo got to try absinthe. A really, really excellent day.

A feel-good poem for a feel-good day.

The Common Cormorant
The common cormorant (or shag)
Lays eggs inside a paper bag,
The reason as you see, no doubt,
It is to keep the lightning out.
But what these unobservant birds
Have never thought of is that herds
Of wandering bears might come with buns
And steal the bags to hold the crumbs.

Date: 2003-08-24 04:54 pm (UTC)Saiyuki -- or, to give it the full name, Gensomaden Saiyuki -- is _very_ loosely based on the traditional story of the Journey to the West. (Or, as we used to watch on television, Monkey!) The first three DVDs are out in formal American release so far, with more to come. Pirate versions have been available on ebay for a while now. It's based on a manga by Minekura Kazuya, which is absolutely gorgeous stuff. Lots of trauma, angst, adventure, bishonen, the usual. I recommend it highly -- but _don't_ watch the English dub, it's appalling.

Date: 2003-08-24 05:02 pm (UTC)And the original Japanese producers, Studio Pierrot, are about to do a third series of it over there, starting in October. Fans are -- happy. Very happy. (Well, something of the happiness of fans waiting for Return of the King, in that they hope it'll be still good, but are worried that it won't . . .)
