multiple dimensions
Mar. 15th, 2004 02:48 amEnd of convention good; much good anime watched overall; bring and buy proved profitable and pleasant; generally speaking a good weekend.
But I am very glad that I booked tomorrow off work. It's not just for recuperation; it's to catch up on all those weekend tasks like cleaning and ironing and so on. All right, it's for recuperation too.
I had some thoughts while watching Peacemaker Kurogane yesterday which I was trying to formalise.
There are three dimensions in which we see something; length, breadth, height. (Ignore the fact that anime is twodimensional and work with me here.) In something like PMK, where we know the future and the past of most of the characters in the series (unless the author decides to deviate drastically from historical fact, or moreso than already) this knowledge will inform our viewing. If we know that Okita Soushi is going to die of consumption, that lends an added nuance to each scene we see him in, and to our comprehension of how he behaves, and our perception of what he does. So the fourth dimension is time.
The fifth dimension is fiction. As mentioned earlier, the author can deviate from historical fact. The question is, how much will they do so?
