This is probably going to be rather disjointed. I'm busy answering mail and reading news and doing stuff the like of which I have not done for a couple of days, due to having my head under the pleasant waters of Minamicon 9. Such a nice way to drown. Pretty noises. Pretty sights. Happy people.
Stuff started on Friday. Over the weekend, I saw various new bits of anime, and may well get confused as to which day I saw them on. Oh well. Met up with friends, including Remiel/Tim (who sends his regards to you in return, Petronia) and others. Saw Samurai Deeper Kyo, which was fun if not world-shaking, and since the French translation's already at book 9 (English is coming from Tokyopop in June, I think), that's another one on the To Investigate list. Also saw Witch Hunter Robin, which was very neat. Must see more. Hope it continues as stylish, and hope that it has story to go with it. Also something called Licensed by Royalty about a pair of British (I think) secret agents and their head office and their enthusiastically keeping busy. Not bad, but . . . wouldn't go out of my way for it. Also some fluffy stuff about a girl called Nana who splits into seven different alternate forms of herself, which clearly made a deep, deep impression on me.
Saturday. Got up at 7.30 am. Headed off to convention. (2 buses an hour, or half an hour's walk. Luckily got bus times right.) Spent a while sharing Saiyuki djs and scans with enthusiastic friends. Spent a while in dealers' room. (No, really, I was most abstemious, and only bought the 2 currently available Yami no Matsuei DVDs on the grounds of moral obligation, the latest Utena (3 episodes on one DVD? Dear God . . .), and some Dirty Pair manga on the bring and buy stall.) Had donned costume shortly after arrival. Okay. I confess. I was wearing a tacky labcoat and a cream shirt and dark tie and had my hair down and my glasses on, and was attempting Tenpou Gensui. As costumes go, it was really quite comfortable for sitting around and watching anime in. (I will also note, in an aside, that those romance or adventure novels which claim that women can easily bind their breasts with bandages have it wrong, wrong, wrong. Ahem.)
Let's see. Saw first two episodes of Prince of Tennis. Yes, this does explain a few things. No, I am not a convert, though I agree it has definite points to it. Saw first two episodes of Getbackers. Fun. Probably wouldn't go far out of my way for it, but neatly done. Saw first two episodes of Wolf's Rain. Much is now very clear. Will go out of my way for this one.
Attended masquerade. Walked up between rows of chairs with a cigarette (borrowed, I assure you) clenched between my teeth and a book in my hands. Got a laugh, if not a prize. And being introduced as "Marshal of the Western Army of Heaven" had its moments. ;) Attended charity auction afterwards, noticed heavy lack of women bidders. Probably because most of the stuff being auctioned was cute-for-men rather than cute-for-women. Especially the lifesize cast Sailor Moon figure.
(Yes, I did get a photo taken of me in costume, April, and I will see if I can get it developed and up, or link to some other photo site.)
Oh, and on Saturday I had one of those coincidences which wouldn't work in a novel, as the audience would claim it was far too unlikely. I'd just come out of something that I didn't want to watch (I forget what) and was complimenting a couple of gothically dressed types on their costumes. (Which turned out to be normal dress rather than costumes qua costumes, but hey.) One asked in return who I was supposed to be. I pulled out my copy of the Gaiden tankoubon to explain. She blinked, gasped, squealed, "Saiyuki Gaiden!" It turned out she'd seen both series of the anime and was a desperate fan, but had not as yet got her hands on the manga, or run across any of the big fan nexi or lists on the net. I promised to bring in some scans/djs on Sunday and to give her the addresses of a few sites. It's a really nice feeling to run into someone whom you can so particularly help.
Eh. Saturday night, anyhow. Masquerade, auction, karaoke (they didn't have any of the Saiyuki music or Yami no Matsuei music, but they did at least have Utena, and a frothing mob of a dozen girls hogged two microphones while trying to belt out take my revolution, and you can imagine the rest yourself) and late night show involving some j-rock videos. Pretty men, pleasant orchestration, but I sidled off at 2am and missed the Mirage of Blaze that had been promised.
Sunday morning. Staggered in on automatic, ordered pot of coffee, drank pot of coffee. Shared scans and djs with various friends, who appreciated them. New friend from yesterday was not happy to see the current point at which the Gaiden had paused. Alas. Saw episodes of Hack Sign: Legend of Twilight's Bracelet, and while I cannot confirm that I was asleep for part of it, I do appear to have lost half an hour or so at that point, and blinked to see the closing credits. Was thankfully more awake for episodes 3 and 4 of Wolf's Rain, which was still good.
One point made me metaphorically prick up my ears. We were being given some interesting graphics of red moons and flowers (somehow linked to the Flower Girl -- does anyone else have the urge to mutter about Bloduedd at this point?) and the flower they showed was a moonflower. No, really. There is a flower like that, which blooms for a single night and then fades. Unfortunately, the smell is rather overpowering, but the flower itself is beautiful. So I grinned. Always nice to catch a reference.
Said goodbye to friends. Went home. Had hot bath. Brain still fairly dead.
I will doubtless think of stuff tomorrow which I have failed to remember today. That's how it works.
