Her vision slid between the two extremes from one moment to another, and she couldn’t be sure which one was dominant: they both seemed to exist simultaneously, in an optical illusion like those pictures that were both a young woman and a skull at the same time. )

Got somewhat rained on while coming home from work with bag full of grocery shopping. Optimism urges me to assert that at least none of the groceries got ruined, so it could have been worse. Cynicism points out that it would have been better without the rain in the first place.

Common sense points out that I am now comfortably at home and the rain is outside.
