. . . While I will admit to some surprise in discovering that the young lady was of the medical profession herself, we soon found a common ground in the discussion of certain medical problems -- indeed, far more so than the "Doctor". We were discussing the catheterisation of the heart, when our attention was distracted by some ruffians who had challenged Holmes and the "Doctor" and were firing pistols at them. As soon as this minor problem was dealt with, Dr Jones and I returned to more interesting matters, and I confess I paid little interest to the "Doctor's" babble about alien invasions . . .

Rose can totally understand why the Doctor had to hook up with someone else. He needed someone. And she's not objecting. She understands that he felt lonely.

She knows there's been other people before her.

She thinks it's kind of sad that Martha is so obviously her opposite. A doctor and in with UNIT? Get real. That's nothing like her.

But when she has the Doctor, her very own Doctor, all hers, in her world now, she spends an evening looking up "Martha Jones" on the internet.

Apparently she died in the Cybermen thing.

Well. That solves that problem.

Useful day at work, but rather tiring.

I know I've quoted this before. I like it.

"He strikes a stone in the forest," she chanted, "stone bleeds blood. He dances savagely in the courtyard of the impertinent. He sets the liar's roof on fire."
[...]
"He's not a god," said Kadiatu.
"His temples are the preserves of priestesses," said the major. "It's women who dance for the Lightning God. His spirit possesses them through the dance."
"Why me?"
"Don't ask me that," said the major. "Ask the dead."
[...]
"Back there," said Kadiatu, "the major seemed to think you were Shango."
"Who's Shango?"
"Yoruba thunder god."
"Oh, Shango," said the Doctor. "Did you know the Yoruba have over two hundred deities?"
"Are you?"
"Mind you, Shintoism has thousands." The Doctor turned to look at her. "Do I look like a thunder god?"
"How would I know?" said Kadiatu. "I've never met one."
"Faced with the unexplained," said the Doctor, "people have a tendency to let their imaginations run wild. There are no gods. I should know, I've met a few."
"The Shango cult is almost exclusively female."
"People get the wrong end of the stick."
"I'll bet."
"It's true," said the Doctor. "I was in Ife during the tenth century and there may have been some static electricity involved. I was also in Mesopotamia in the time of Gilgamesh and I've visited all three Atlantises. It's not my fault. It's the planet, things happen there."

After an interesting dream last night involving Doctor Who, I have come to a very definite conclusion.

In the dub of Bleach, the part of Aizen Sousuke should have been voiced by Tom Baker.

He would have been so trustworthy. So commanding. And so megalomaniacally charming.

(If you're curious, the dream for some reason had me being Romana, and the main bit I remember which gave rise to the above thought had me-as-Romana kneeling in front of the Doctor, who was sitting in a high-backed chair, and taking his hands in mine as he said, "Do you trust me?")

(Then I woke up. Dammit.)

(And yes, I will be working this into something else as soon as I can figure out how.)

Summer

Leaving the house,
I went out to see

The frog, for example,
in her satiny skin;

and her eggs
like a slippery veil;

and her eyes
with their golden rims;

and the pond
with its risen lilies;

and its warmed shores
dotted with pink flowers;

and the long, windless afternoons;
and the white heron

like a dropped cloud,
taking one slow step

then standing awhile then taking
another, writing

her own soft-footed poem
through the still waters.

"Doctor," Rose said patiently, "there is a giant flying chicken outside the door."

"Giant?" the Doctor asked. "How giant is giant? Because I've seen some pretty giant chickens in my time. Is it giant enough to crush Big Ben under a single claw? Or more house-sized?"

"Okay, it's not very giant giant, it's more medium giant. Big for a chicken. And it says it wants to talk to you."

"Oh?" the Doctor said warily.

"About a library book from the Shokan Division Library that's five centuries overdue --"

"Oh dear," the Doctor said. "Just sat on the dematerialisation lever. Whoops."

The Doctor shrugged. "This Servalan seems a competent woman. I'm more surprised that you didn't try to shoot her." He gave Avon a disapproving look.

"I did," Avon said. "She ducked."

"Astonishing how few people have the sense to duck."

"Mm."

"Astonishing, in fact, how few people have any sense," the Doctor said. "I imagine that there are few minds out there who can truly challenge you -- or even appreciate you in a way that makes the appreciation worthwhile."

"You almost sound as if you understand."

"Almost."

"Sorry," the Doctor said. He almost sounded as if he meant it. "I don't go round doing that sort of thing just like that."

"Except if they're blonde and pretty," Jack remarked.

"Oi! Pretty has nothing to do with it."

"Blonde, then?"

"Nor does being blonde."

"Because, you know, I could always get a wig . . ."

"Jack," the Doctor said.

"A blonde wig. With fringe."

"Jack --"

"And I can hold your hand real cutely."

"No," the Doctor said firmly.

As I waited for Holmes to finish his private conversation with his brother Mycroft, I observed some of the other members of the Diogenes Club. Two of them, a bearded fellow in a black overcoat and a white-haired gentleman in a frock coat of striking plum velvet, were occupied in staring at each other.

The bearded man scribbled on a piece of paper and waved the result at his fellow. STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE TEMPORAL LOCATORS, DOCTOR?

The white-haired man dashed off a note of his own and displayed it with a hand that shook with fury. IMPUDENT JACKANAPES!!!

"Don't worry," the Doctor said cheerfully as they marched down the street. "What we have here is a perfectly normal case of non-linear recursive temporality. So all we have to do is go to her shop and history will just happen as it should. And when we get to page two . . ."

The Doctor held up a hand. "To attempt to hack into the TARDIS network communications grid in order to siphon funds from the Federation banking system to a very private personal account?"

"Would you believe it's to fund noble revolutionary plans?" Avon inquired, deadpan.

"No," the Doctor said flatly.

Muraki scanned his latest set of reports on strange occurrences, looking for anything which he could use as a tool against the shinigami, or for his revenge. Anything at all. However strange. However twisted. However impossible. However outre, exotic, unthinkable, inconceivable, unnatural, or unlikely. Demons, ghosts, sorcery, ancient relics, murders, sacrifices, monsters, dark powers . . .

He paused at a newspaper article about conical robots with death rays and a mysterious foreigner in a long scarf and a blue crate.

Then again, one had to be rational about these things. He screwed up the clipping, and neatly tossed it into the bin.

She's lonely too. It's not just him. She's used to the familiar throb of the Eye of Harmony, the whisper of the Matrix; even the brief, edgy, thrilling communications with the TARDISes of hunters or of other renegades.

Her slow rhythms sing in his brain, resonate in his blood, and he wishes that he could promise her a future, but he knows that she has just as much hope of finding another of her kind as he does one of his own. And yet she does hope.

Together they should be less solitary, but instead they are twice as lonely.

"I think it's very unlikely," Ace said diplomatically.

"A shame," the Roseblack sighed. "Ah well. We can make you the showpiece of how ordinary humans and the Chosen of the Dragons work together."

"Of course," the Doctor said airily, "the TARDIS' power source is beneath the console, but don't fret. Even I wouldn't try tampering with that."

Too late he saw the thoughtful glint in Adric's eyes.

The solution was simplicity itself. Sleeping drugs in the chocolate cake left temptingly in the fridge, and a quick revision course on the Master's hypnosis techniques, followed by deep programming of Adric to forget that he'd ever heard anything of the sort.

He tied a knot in his scarf to remind himself not to speak so carelessly.

A week later, he remembered to wake Adric up.

Walls

Without consideration, without pity, without shame
they have built great and high walls around me.

And now I sit here and despair.
I think of nothing else: this fate gnaws at my mind;

for I had many things to do outside.
Ah why did I not pay attention when they were building the walls.

But I never heard any noise or sound of builders.
Imperceptibly they shut me from the outside world.
