incandescensThere are few pleasures in life like that of walking out of the dentist with the news that one does not need any dental attention (touch wood).
Well, okay, so there are other pleasures which are also very enjoyable. Definitely. But I maintain that this is a real and significant pleasure. The evening sky has a new and beautiful transient light to it. Even if it's also full of grey clouds and about to rain. Attitude is everything.
Incidentally, fun as the Olympic Games are being to watch bits of, you know what I'd like to see? A non-gold-medal-winning athlete being interviewed post-event, making a comment along the lines of "well, the best man/woman won, and I'm grateful to have had the chance to compete against other athletes of this calibre". It'd be . . . refreshing.

A certain critic — for such men, I regret to say, do exist — made the nasty remark about my last novel that it contained ‘all the old Wodehouse characters under different names’. He has probably now been eaten by bears, like the children who made mock of the prophet Elisha: but if he still survives he will not be able to make a similar charge against Summer Lightning. With my superior intelligence, I have outgeneralled this man by putting in all the old Wodehouse characters under the same names. Pretty silly it will make him feel, I rather fancy.
