Alleluia, my drains are now working again. Even if I had to take all day off work. I will have to apologise tomorrow, even though I'm sure everyone will be understanding about it. (Drains are a nuisance to everyone.)

Interestingly, the first item which the plumber deployed, and which cleared the blockage nicely, was basically a sort of vacuum cleaner with a wide tube and nozzle. He unscrewed the u-bend under the sink and hoovered it out, then also did a bit of hoovering on the connections on either side. Ghastly smell (old wet fried fat), but it worked. My drains now (and hopefully for the future) drain properly.

I then spent the next half-hour or so scrubbing the sink and draining board down with cleaner/disinfectant, and catching up on my washing-up. Luckily the weather was good and I could have the windows open. As mentioned earlier, there was a bit of a smell.

Back to work tomorrow.

Then wanton Lemminkainen
went out visiting
making merry with the isle's lasses
amid braided heads' beauty:
wherever he turned his head
there his mouth is kissed
wherever he reached his hand
there his hand is touched.
He stayed out all night
in the pitch darkness:
there was no village
where there were not ten houses
there was not a house
where there were not ten daughters
nor yet a daughter
not a mother's child
by whose side he did not stretch
and whose arm he did not tame.
A thousand the brides he knew
a hundred widows he laid:
there were not two out of ten
three out of a whole hundred
wenches left unheld
widows left unlaid.

[...]

As by night alone he went
his way through the villages
there to the long headland's end
to the tenth village
he saw not one house
in which there were not three dwellings
he saw no dwelling
in which there were not three fellows
he saw no fellow
who was not honing a sword
nor sharpening a hatchet
meant for Lemminkainen's head.

Essence of aggravation. But hey, clean dishes! Clean clothes! Clean pipes!

The delays would be rather aggravating, but YAY! Clear drains!!

When I had a problem with drains the plumber would get at it with the plunger but it kept coming back, and eventually he had to break out his subterrine drain-exploring camera. Turns out it was tree roots, backing stuff up. Backing up toilet stuff to be precise (urk). But! All of it happened outside! (And the camera was cool to watch.)
