trawling serendipitously
May. 30th, 2004 02:17 amI really should trawl through charity shops more often. Ran across a Margery Allingham collection of short stories which I didn't know existed.
Also, in the serendipity line, a year or two ago I borrowed a book from the local library based on the whole legend of Troy, and enjoyed it, but managed to completely forget the name or title. While poking around in the bookshop today, happened to notice a table full of anything they could find re Troy, in an attempt to capitalise on the movie. I looked, and presto, there was a copy of said book. (The Song of Troy, by Colleen McCullough.) Excellent. It's not world-shatteringly brilliant, but it's an enjoyable read.
(Okay, I confess -- what I was actually looking for in the charity shops were copies of Elinor M Brent-Dyer's Chalet School books, which are mostly out of print. We have a few, and my mother and I find them appalling/nostalgic/amusing reading matter. Didn't actually find any, but the Margery Allingham is a pleasant reward.)

Seduction
Weep not for little Leonie,
Abducted by a French Marquis!
Though loss of honour was a wrench,
Just think how it's improved her French.
