eight days to go till holiday

I have volunteered for a specific task at work. This may have been a mistake. OTOH, volunteering for a job that needs to be done now may mean not being forcibly put onto a job that needs to be done later, which I would enjoy less. Swings, roundabouts.

Irene glanced at the reflection of the gunmen in the mirror. They were both doing a good job of looking blankly uncomprehending, but she was quite certain that they were paying attention. The professional part of her mind – the bit that wasn’t actually much help at moments of danger, but operated on a more aesthetic level - noted that expert conspirators didn’t discuss this sort of thing in front of the hired help.
Or at least, not in front of hired help who were going to survive the next few hours.
