the usual state of panic

Er, sorry.
In my defense, I have been busy. But then so have all of you. Again, sorry. I will try to do a bit better next year.
And in the meantime, The Lost Plot is now out in the UK, and will be out in America in January . . .
Tomorrow I'm off home for Christmas with my family, and I won't be getting back till after the new year. Bits of packing are all over the place, the fridge is mostly empty, the zigger-zagger is groaning with wet laundry, etcetera.
The railway situation looks like being painful, due to a strike across one possible route. I can either go via London (which will mean having to get a taxi across London from one station to another, or trying to handle my luggage on the Tube on a Saturday afternoon), or I can take a different route which will only involve a single change at a particular station, but will take about an hour longer, raising the travel time to approximately six hours.
The decisive factor here is probably the question of getting a seat on the London train. On the Saturday before Christmas.
. . . roll on the six-hour journey, I think.
