feeling bullish
Jul. 5th, 2003 01:05 amIt is rare for me to positively hate something, but I have decided that I hate Red Bull; an obnoxious stimulant drink with the tagline in advertisements of "Red Bull gives you wings!"
Yesterday, while I was working in the Cardiothoracic Unit Office, a young lady came round with a bagful of cans of the stuff. She handed them around cheerfully, and went further into the directorate as well; later, while washing out my mug before heading home, I saw a couple of the nurses having a swig or two. Corporate promotion? Generosity from the shop downstairs who happened to have a surfeit? Not sure. Anyhow, at that point it was nearly the end of the afternoon, so I put my free can on one side, thinking that it would probably be exactly what I wanted on a Friday afternoon. (In terms of stopping me falling asleep, that is.)
So. Friday afternoon. (Some of us who are not American were working today. Snark snark.) I decide to have a few swigs.
I admit that I am not particularly fond of carbonated drinks. But, even so -- dear god, the nose-warping overly sweet attempted lemon flavour was vile in itself. As to the urges to twitch and to babble, well, yes, I was awake, but I hadn't been that far on a stimulant blender since the first time I ever went on a caffeine jag. (Third year of university. Taking part in sponsored event with "Light Opera Society" involving singing through entire 13 Gilbert and Sullivan works. Decided to try to recruit self by drinking several cups of extra-strength coffee in short succession. Learning experience.)
I dumped most of the stuff down the sink, eyed the way that the bottom of the sink and the drain were fizzing, and added several seconds of running water to make sure it was gone.
Downloaded the new Diablo 2X patch and played with it. Have not as yet noted any significant differences in play, though my character is too low-level to realistically notice any yet. Give it time. At least I've got her to a high enough level to have the Frost Nova spell, aka "blast everything in a circle round you with a low-damage ice attack that slows them down, then run like hell before they reach you".

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." (Theodore Roosevelt, in 1918)

Date: 2003-07-04 06:57 pm (UTC)Yes, but you have days like Bank Holidays (do most people get off for those?) and Guy Fawkes Day (that effigy-burning thing sounds enormously entertaining :D). I envy the London office sometimes....

Date: 2003-07-04 07:06 pm (UTC)As for effigy-burning, sadly out of fashion these days, at least in Southampton where I live. Half the time the fireworks don't take place on the 5th November anyhow, due to parents having to schedule things so that their children can attend safely/not miss other commitments/whatever, and the other half it's just a matter of fireworks rather than a good rousing bonfire with a guy on top.
Start your own effigy-burning tradition. You know you want to.

(Though it's a little less funny once I find out that that was an urban legend that had been going around, and not something they'd just tossed in at random.)
