The weekend was even better than planned.
Friday I went down to London (only managing to forget my hairbrush, and it was easy enough to buy a replacement for that) and did some shopping before meeting up with my parents and sister in the evening for a nice meal at an Italian restaurant. Very nice indeed. (Also some presents, which were also very nice indeed.)
Saturday I did some shopping in the morning, before meeting up with my parents in the courtyard at the Royal Academy, where my father was looking at an exhibition of bronzes there. My mother had the brilliant idea that if I really wanted to buy lunch for her (as I did) then we should go across the road to Fortnum & Mason -- yes, it is directly across the road -- and I should buy us both snacks in the ice-cream parlor there. She added to this by insisting on getting us both a glass of champagne, in compliance with my aunt's wishes -- said aunt couldn't make it to London, but had requested that my parents get me a glass of champagne on her account. So we drank rose champagne. With mini-strudels as a snack. In Fortnum & Mason.
We then proceeded (perfectly steadily, I assure you) to the matinee performance of Sweeney Todd at the Adelphi Theatre. It had Michael Ball as Sweeney, and Imelda Staunton as Mrs Lovett, among others. It was a fantastic show. And when it finished, the actor playing the Beadle (I think it was Peter Polycarpou) announced that they would be taking donations for a specific actors' charity fund (the name of which I have now forgotten) in the entrance area, and that anyone willing to contribute ten pounds or more could have their photo taken with Michael Ball.
Three guesses what I did.
After that unexpected bit of . . . well, pure awesome . . . and a break in Covent Garden for a bit of shopping (mostly window-shopping), we eventually made it to supper at a rather nice Chinese restaurant. Which was splendid.
Sunday . . . well, now I'm back home.
It really was a fantastic birthday and a fantastic weekend.
