Oof. That was a tiring day.

Made it to the Great Yorkshire Show. And it was really very good. Though expensive - twenty pounds to get in! ouch! though to be fair, it was very much a "working" show with a lot of stuff that was immediately relevant to farming, rather than the sort of fairgrounds-and-fancy-displays that you get with some shows. I had a few hours to wander round, buy some souvenirs, admire the bee and honey tent, the rabbits, the birds of prey, a lot of displays, etc.

Then it started raining.

I did still manage to see the sheep, the pigs, and the goats, but by that time it was coming up on five o'clock and I was soaked. It wasn't that bad a rain, but it was bad enough, and I was glad that I was wearing shoes rather than open-toed sandals. Some people had umbrellas, and others had rain ponchos or anoraks. I ... didn't.

Still, I didn't melt. ;)

It was an excellent afternoon. Perhaps it would have been even nicer without the rain, but I got to see pretty much what I wanted to see. And then I went back to Harrogate (the nearest town, plus there was a free shuttle bus-service to and from the Harrogate station) and had coffee and cake, plus bought fabric in the fabric shop there, and cake at Betty's Tea Rooms.

Hopefully I won't get a cold, but que sera, sera. And it was an excellent day.

And if we must have rain, at least it didn't rain during the Tour de France. That would have been worse.

For some reason I thought this was a fabric/ wool show. Was it actually agricultural? And err, what's the draw of agriculture?

(Sounds a bit like Toronto's Royal Winter Fair, in which various animals get ribbons for quality- and are then bought for steaks- and horses display their trotting abilities, and people sell crafts and food, and there's always a 200 lb statue of something carved out of butter.)

It was mainly agricultural, and more a show for working farmers/smallholders than a tourist trap. Part of my reason for going was curiosity - I'd never been before, and to be honest, I had hoped there might be some areas which involved preparation of yarn, spinning, etc. There was sheep-showing, and there were shearing demonstrations, and there were a couple of people using spinning wheels, but it wasn't quite what I might have hoped for.

Still fun, though. But I'm not sure I'll necessarily go next year.
