incandescensHad a satisfying time earlier this evening cutting fabric for a new quilt. I now have a lot of squares and triangles. Next step probably involves doing a diagram to make absolutely sure I'm putting it all together in the right order. (Captious critics may suggest that I should have done a more complete layout diagram in the first place. These things, they do happen.)
Today was quite a mix of weather - sun, rain, and something which was either hail or snow, but was mercifully brief either way. And half the clothing stores in town are doing the usual thing by being several months ahead of schedule and already getting into late spring / early summer outfits. Fools. I cuddle up in my heavy winter coat and jumpers.

“Leave it for the moment,” Irene said wearily. “It’s not as if I hold any formal rank –“
“You’re a Librarian-in-Residence,” Kai said firmly. “And you’re a Librarian, anyhow. That gives you a diplomatic ranking which any proper court would recognise. She behaved as if your honour was for sale. Irene, if you don’t value yourself more, then my kin won’t give you the respect you deserve.”
Something in the way that he’d said that rang alarm bells in Irene’s head. “Kai, should I be worrying about anything that you might or might not have said to your family about me while you were visiting them?”
Kai wasn’t good at bluffing, and the hint of a flush showed on his high cheekbones. “Well, naturally you were mentioned,” he said. “Though not by everyone. I didn’t gossip about you. But my uncle Ao Shun asked after you, and of course I told him that the Library had removed your probation since you’d dealt with Alberich. He was very pleased to hear it. He’s always thought that you showed proper filial loyalty in working for the Library as your parents do – no, I’m not going to ask to meet them again, please don’t give me that look.”
