I've cut back on my watching the news on the television in the evenings. There's too much chance that I'll see some particularly loathsome politician demonstrating his (or her) nature, and get further depressed as a result. Programs such as Masterchef, Mythbusters, or The Avengers are picking up the slack instead. Probably much better for my mental health.
It's not that I'm not keeping up with the news. But at least when I'm reading it in a paper or on the computer I don't have to sit through twenty minutes of earnest discussion of "Brexit" in order to get to the weather forecast.

“Right.” A turning later, he spoke again. “You’re her, aren’t you? That English boss?”
“If I was, would I tell you?” Irene was listening for the sound of police sirens behind them. It all depended how long it took the cops to return to their usual state of mind.
“Sure you would,” the driver said cheerfully. “I mean, hey, this is New York, this is the Big Apple, people like you are famous here! Look, if you are, can I have your autograph?”
As reactions went, Irene had to suppose it was more directly useful to her than get out of my car you filthy criminal, but it did leave her feeling sympathetic towards Captain Venner. “No problem,” she said. “Got something to write on?”
He tossed her back a notepad and pencil-stub while managing the cab one-handed. Irene gritted her teeth and scribbled Jeanette Smith. “For anyone in particular?” she asked.
“It’s for my daughter. See, I’m always telling her that women can get ahead in this world, that she just needs to apply herself, and when she sees that I had someone like you in my cab –“

Date: 2016-06-29 02:06 am (UTC)FWIW, ever since Brexit the Guardian's page has regularly broken my browser.

Date: 2016-06-30 01:39 am (UTC)Newspaper online pages have so much gunk on them these days. I like the Independent myself, but the amount of flash on it slows my browser to a crawl, or even gets to the stage of "a script cannot run and therefore your browser will freeze".
