And . . . well, I expect to be busy tomorrow at work. I'd also forgotten that it was my grandfather's birthday. Luckily, my father (who's going to Guernsey for the day to spend it with him) is going to buy some alcohol on the way in the duty-free and will give it to him as my present. Guilt. (I'll pay my father back later.)

The duty-free... Guernsey *isn't* part of the EC? You have to cross borders to go to the Channel Islands?

Great Britain isn't part of the Schengen agreement so there's more border stuff between GB and , than say, Germany and France. (Or Norway and J. Random Schengen Country. We're not EU members, but we are part of the Schengen area. Go figure.) Besides, even inside the Schengen borders, you get to shop taxfree at the airports if you're going to another country. It's an airport thing, I guess. :)

(Also, I think the Channel Islands still have some special tax-rules, but that may have been removed while I wasn't looking. Which is most of the time.)

We do indeed have to wave our passports/etc to visit the Channel Islands, or France... ridiculous, I quite agree. Roll on a more sensible arrangement. But in the meantime, the duty-free shop in the airport has booze, which will be an acceptable present for my grandfather.

I think the Channel Islands still have some sort of special tax rules, resulting in dubious financial practices by companies trying to base themselves there, but am not really informed on the subject.
