She's lonely too. It's not just him. She's used to the familiar throb of the Eye of Harmony, the whisper of the Matrix; even the brief, edgy, thrilling communications with the TARDISes of hunters or of other renegades.

Her slow rhythms sing in his brain, resonate in his blood, and he wishes that he could promise her a future, but he knows that she has just as much hope of finding another of her kind as he does one of his own. And yet she does hope.

Together they should be less solitary, but instead they are twice as lonely.

Akabane steps in close, all darkness, and raises his eyebrows curiously.

The hilt of the red sword is touching Kagami's chest now, pressing the blood-wet silk of his coat against his skin. He is conscious of the blade standing out behind his body, of the fibrillation of his heart around the sword.

Each heartbeat lasts forever.

He'll keep the secret of what he might have said. One final privacy to take through the last mirror and see what's there.

He falls from the blade. All his glass shatters.

Al crossed his legs nervously. The metal-legged chihuahua in his lap squeaked angrily. "I'm terribly sorry," he said, staring at the ground. "I think so far . . . um, he hasn't annoyed Professor Snape."

"No?"

"No. Um. He reduced him to an icy slavering fury instead."

"And you think that this might be connected with your brother's transformation?"

Al slumped further. "After the duel with Colonel Mustang on the Quidditch pitch yesterday, sir, I think that Professor Snape would probably be part of a very long line."

Otherwise: well, I don't need to have my ears syringed, as the wax has cleared. This is good. However, the doctor was now able to see that I have ear infection, which is less good, so it's antibiotic eardrops for the next week. He didn't sound very surprised, though, and it would seem that it's just a minor infection, quite usual, and he said not to bother coming back in a week's time if it had cleared up, and . . .

. . . blasted ears.

Also, Kuchiki Byakuya would have won the mrs joyful prize for rafia work. (This is a joke which only makes sense if you know both Bleach and Nigel Molesworth.)

This has been a rather strenuous week. I look forward to the end of it.

Somewhere, there was a garden.

Somewhere in the garden, there were peach trees.

Somewhere under the peach trees, two immortals who look like young men were drinking wine.

"You see," Fugen said, "this is a learning experience for you."

Taikoubou blinked owlishly. "How?"

"Because for the last few decades you've been learning how to move monsters, how to ride magical beings, how to fly through the air, how to use paopei, and how to fight."

"So?"

"So today you're learning how to get drunk in a peach orchard."

"Is that appropriate?"

"I think it is," Fugen said, refilling their cups.
