It was quarter to five in the afternoon. I was walking through some of the old streets in York, near the Minster (a sort of church-compilation building, old, bigger than a number of cathedrals) when the bells started ringing.

They were ringing peals. The sound was heavy in the air, funneled through the narrow streets. As I came out into an open area next to the Minster, it actually seemed to be liquid in the air, something hanging there, like incense or smoke or fog.

One of those moments that was made even better by the pure accident of it; I didn't go there planning to hear the bells, but they were perfect when I did.
