where did the money go?
Sep. 5th, 2004 02:09 amReally quite a rewarding day. (Touch wood that it won't spoil itself after I say something like that.)
Made plane booking for trip to America. Out on 23/10 to San Francisco, stay with friend there, go to Yaoicon on the Thursday (probably), stay there till the Sunday, head off on Monday 1/11 to Beth, head home again on Sunday 7/11 . . .
. . . oh, wait. I've just realised I'm going to be in America during the Election.
Okay. If anyone's listening, count that as the required disaster/spoiler for an otherwise good day.
Must remember to book time off work quickly, before anyone else gets ideas regarding that fortnight.
Also . . . well, I was supposed to be looking out for a watch for my parents to give me for my birthday, with the implication being that I'd note down details of a type I wanted and they'd purchase it. But today, while poking round in the John Lewis department store, I saw a watch that spoke to me. Quite unlike the one I've worn for the last few years, which is a narrow oval (worn) gilt frame and a black leather strap. Wideish (though not too large) stainless steel dial, small window for date and day as well as hour markings, double large stainless steel chain strap. Reduced to £60 from £120, alone in the display case, liable to disappear at any minute, last of the line.
My parents agreed that I had indeed done the only sensible thing in buying it on the spot, and they'd refund it.
Having a bit of absinthe again tonight as I start tackling my current Exalted deadlines. Started with the chunk that doesn't actually need much work in order to ease myself in with a sense of accomplishment. The rest of it's going to need a lot more work. Oh well.
Also had a stroke of luck while buying Clinique supplies -- yes, I know this is very petty, but it did please me. I was hoping to get a small bar of soap as well as a large one, for travelling convenience, and the lady behind the counter apologised for not having any for sale, but gave me 2 (two) sets of sample Clinique stuff, which included 2 mini-soaps as well as some other mini-goodies. That was very nice of her indeed. Admittedly I was spending a decent amount in buying a new large bar of soap and large bottle of clarifying lotion, but even so. Pleasant.
Was rereading my Fritz Leiber copies of the Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser novels. They have their faults, but their virtues too. I'd forgotten how much I liked them.

Meanwhile around the golden couch was an ever-thickening press of courtiers, nobles, councillors, and officers. New titles were being awarded by the dozen to all firstcomers. Sentences of perpetual banishment and confiscation of property were beng laid on Hisvin and all others absent, guilty or guiltless. Reports were coming in on the successful fighting of all fires in the city and the complete vanishment of rats from its streets. Plans were being laid for the complete extirpation from under the city of the entire rat-metropolis of Lankhmar Below -- subtle and complex plans which did not sound to the Mouser entirely practical. It was becoming clear that under the saintly Radomix Kistomerces, Lankhmar would more than ever be ruled by foolish fantasy and shameless greed. At moments like this it was easy to understand why the Gods of Lankhmar were so furiously exasperated by their city.
Various lukewarm thanks were extended to the Mouser and Fafhrd, although most of the newcomers seemed not at all clear as to what part the two heroes had played in conquering the rats, despite Elakeria's repeated accounts of the final fighting and of Glipkerio's sea-plunge. Soon, clearly, seeds would be planted against the Mouser and Fafhrd in Radomix's saintly-vague mind, and their bright heroic roles imperceptibly darkened to blackest villainy.

Date: 2004-09-05 03:48 pm (UTC)Heh. Don't worry, if you don't go anywhere close to a polling place, you'll be able to ignore it. After all, a lot of American citizens manage the trick.
The pre-election rhetoric is another story, but you're probably getting some of that anyway.
