live boldly, brother, till we meet again
Sep. 25th, 2004 12:28 amOkay, so no absinthe to America.
Eye feels much, much better today. Will stick to glasses tomorrow and possibly Sunday as well, though, to make sure it's calmed down.
Mm. Princess Kaguya or Kaguya-hime by Reiko Shimizu is a strange and confusing manga. So far we have secret government conspiracies, mysterious human sacrifices, a group of ten children who escaped a lonely island base 10 years ago but have returned in an attempt to find out the truth of their past, people dying by various forms of decapitation when they reach 16, obsessions of many varieties . . . interesting, indeed. Up to vol 3 in French so far, and vol 4 due out later this month. A good long way to go yet.
Must remember to buy new bus pass tomorrow.
Have not managed to do any rewriting tonight; instead, intend to go to bed at halfway reasonable hour.

The Man In The Golden Mask
[...]
The Musketeers laughed heartily at this,
And wiped the ghostly chalk off of their skin;
"See how the wicked flee," said Aramis,
"Where no man doth pursue -- and so amen."
"But where," said Porthos, "is our gilded host?"
They all were quiet for a little while,
Then Athos said, with just the slightest smile,
"I wonder if he could have been a ghost?"
The morning next, D'Artagnan shook awake
Called by a messenger, who brought a basket
With wine of Anjou, biscuits, Christmas cake,
A letter bearing just the Gascon's name.
"A man gave me commission, and I came.
The monsieur's name? I did not pause to ask it."
D'Artagnan sat down hard upon his bed
And opened up the letter, where he read:
Monsieur was quite correct; it was on stage
That once we met -- and it was years ago ---
But that is an illuminated page
In memory, though then I did not show
Appreciation. There my fault does lie
Alongside one that points plainly ahead:
"A well-placed point," you said. I gave it naught;
You will imagine what my choler thought;
Had I not been so angry then I ought
Have seen it as a praise disinterested.
And once again I pay the favor back
So meanly as to earn contempt of men
I here salute my equal in attack
(Your wrist is iron now as it was then)
A shining plume above a world so black:
Yours from Hercule-Savinien
De Cyrano de Bergerac --
Live boldly, brother, till we meet again.
