edifying matters

In spare moments -- that is, when a thought comes up -- I'm jotting down little bits and pieces on a particular theme in a notepad file, just in case they come in useful later. I've been trying to work out what works for me in particular fields, so that I can make it work for other people, and this may help.
Otherwise; too many other coders are ill, on holiday, or potentially both but we have no real way of telling. (One hopes not, though. It'd be a waste of a holiday.) And I've been sneezing for most of the day. I really, really hope there was a surfeit of pollen in the air or something like that. (If not, well, I took a lemsip and will cross my fingers.) Incidentally, my father finally (I nagged) took himself to the doctor, on the grounds that his cough from China (2 weeks ago now) and a cold from my sister really shouldn't be producing a continuing, productive-sounding cough like the one he currently has. The doctor said no, it shouldn't, and prescribed him antibiotics. GOOD.
(Any such diatribes on my family or friends being reluctant to go and get medical help lose a certain degree of moral force when I consider my own behaviour, unfortunately. Shame.)
Got package today from http://www.archonia.com -- wonderful place, excellent establishment. Containing X/1999 vol 16, Basara vol 7, and (blush) several volumes of Yu-gi-oh, which is actually rather neat. All in French. Three guesses what went to work in my bag and what I was reading during lunch and what I was reading earlier this evening.

"It is the nature of ambition to make men liars and cheats, to hide the truth in their breasts, and show, like jugglers, another thing in their mouths, to cut all friendships and enmities to the measure of their own interest, and to make a good countenance without the help of good will." (Kenneth Tynan)
"Western man, especially the Western critic, still finds it very hard to go into print and say: 'I recommend you to go and see this because it gave me an erection.'" (Kenneth Tynan)
