in praise of napping
Feb. 20th, 2003 12:48 amThere is something so delightful about curling up in bed where it's warm. One tugs the duvet up to make sure that it's over the shoulders and around the neck, with no gaps to let the cold, cold outside air in. One curls up sideways, then lets the body relax, slowly, simply enjoying the sensation of lying down with the head supported and the body at rest.
Close your eyes.
The room's quiet. Nobody's going to need you for a couple of hours. Nothing needs doing for a couple of hours. You aren't needed. Good. You can enjoy this. Enjoy the slow sensation of breathing in and out. The air trapped under the duvet with you grows warmer.
You're comfortable.
The contemplation of silence and stillness is . . . mm. You'd never quite appreciated it before. You'd never quite realised how pleasant it is to do nothing, think of nothing, lie there in the knowledge that nothing will be required of you for a while.
Eventually you wake up.
