Fugen,

I appreciate the straight fishhook. It’s a work of genius. It means that the fish won’t be able to kill themselves on it – well, unless they try really hard, which is quite possible, because some fishes can be very stupid – anyhow, where was I? Oh, yes. Straight fishhook. Good idea.

The only problem with it is that I don’t catch any fish.

I’m sure that this is all symbolic of some great spiritual question, and I will be thinking about it till I next see you. But in the meantime, I appreciate the straight fishhook.

But... if you caught any fish... then that would interrupt the process of fishing! Which is, as I understand it, very important. More important than catching fish, anyway. Especially if one has beer.

(Though one should take care not to get bored and diddle a power cell to blow up one's lake's fish...)
