the day is full of surprises

incandescensTwo parcels arrived this morning: one was a birthday present from my brother, a translation of the Kalevala (something I'd asked for), while the other one was a present from my parents, an assortment of stuff: a book of quilt postcards, a book of quilt bookmarks, a selection of beads, and a copy of The Invention of Murder: How the Victorians Revelled in Death and Detection and Created Modern Crime, by Judith Flanders, which looks to be an excellent read.
(What can I say? My parents know my tastes.)
Doctor Who this evening was another good episode. I do wonder if it was meant in part as a reply/contradiction/comment on certain themes that seemed to come up a lot in RTD's later run on the series, involving trust/faith in the Doctor, the fact that the Doctor is insufficiently appreciated, that one should be honoured and blessed (ahem) to travel with him, etc. (Though I may be exaggerating slightly. It was just getting to feel a bit that way towards the end of the run. And the actual truth is probably somewhere in the middle.)
