the fox went out on a shiny night
Feb. 27th, 2004 06:49 pmI was humming that song last night, but I could only remember the first verse, and a fragment from the last verse. ("She cried, John, John, your grey goose is gone, and the fox is on the town-o...")
So -- just blew a hundred dollars on the last chunk of Utena (last four dvds of same, to be more precise). I'd been planning to get it for a while, but the act of giving away all that money is always painful. I'm sure I'll get over it once I start watching it, though. Also got Pirates of the Caribbean, which I'd been thinking of getting, and have just been watching it with Beth.
(And I still think the heroine would have had a more stable long-term relationship with the Commodore than with the romantic hero she runs off with.)
Beth was making me (we do tend to use such forceful verbs, don't we?) watch dot HACK last night. Interesting stuff, but ten times more so for people who actually play online games and who can get more of the references. Definitely interesting.
I am learning many valuable lessons about handling four-year-olds. Dear sweet cute things as they are.
Still have a couple of days left.

As far as .hack//SIGN is concerned, we've been watching it on Cartoon Network and are two episodes away from the end. I absolutely love anime, but I'm really unsure of this new minimalist storytelling style. Over 24 episodes, very little story has been conveyed. We've also been watching Noir, which seems to be from the same folks and falls into the same patterns. On .hack, my major enjoyment has been watching the characters, knowing that there are players behind them. Finding out about the players has been intriguing.
Pirates is a no-brainer and sounds great on 5.1. I've got an eye on Utena, but I'm not sold on it yet.

prayed for the moon to give him light,
for he'd many miles to go that night
afore he reached the town-o, town-o,
afore he reached the town-o"
I think the last verse of the one that I knew had to do with the fox-kits and goose grease dripping down their chins, but the exact phraseology escapes me.

or from Rise Up Singing:
The fox went out on a chilly night
Prayed for the moon to give him light
for he'd many a mile to go that night before he reached the town-o town-o town-o
He'd many a mile to go that night
before he reached the town-o
He ran til he came to a great big bin
the ducks and the geese were put therein
said "a couple of you will grease my chin
before I leave this town-o...
He grabbed the grey goose by the neck
slung the little one over his back
he didn't mind their quack-quack-quack
and the legs all dangling down-o...
Old mother pitter-patter jumped out of bed
out of the window she cocked her head
crying "John, John the grey goose is gone
and the fox is on the town-o...
John, he went to the top of the hill
blew his horn both loud & shrill
the fox, he said "I better flee with my kill
he'll soon be on my trail-o..."
He ran til he came to his cozy den
there were the little ones: 8, 9, 10
they said "Daddy, Daddy, you better go back again
'cause it must be a mighty fine town-o..."
Then the fox & his wife without any strife
cut up the goose with fork & knife
they never had such a supper in their life
and the little ones chewd on the bones-o...
