complaining on the upstairs computer
Jan. 20th, 2005 09:41 pmOkay, so --
ntl in Southampton seems to be down for a second day running. Or possibly part of a second day, given that I don't know exactly when it started . . .
Off to Leeds tomorrow for flat-hunting, back Sunday evening, so my apologies to anyone who was looking for me. Hopefully my usual connection will be up and running again by then.
Believe me, this is extremely frustrating to me as well.
6666 got here today, along with Claudia: La porte des enfers; both were drawn by Tacito, who seems to have coarsened his usual style a bit. 6666 is amusing but nothing special, and clearly future technology involves the ability to give all women big breasts. (Though I liked the bit where the tyrant decided to show the newly-awakened Lilith what a space battle was. "Let me conquer a star system for you, Princess . . .") Claudia had more wit to it, as I'd expect from the author (Pat Mills), but Tacito's art is not as gorgeous as Ledroit's (artist to the Requiem series of which this is a spinoff), even though it is okay. Hm. Will have to consider, when the next of both of those come out.
One bit that did particularly amuse me in Claudia was when the protagonist was going shopping in the effective Hell that the story is set in (aka Necropolis), and we had a panning/establishing shot of a huge shopping arcade which was clearly a visual homage to the Galeries Lafayette in Paris. (Except for the vampires, gargoyles, and airships.) I showed it to my parents, and they both said, "Wait, isn't that..."
Anyhow. Leeds tomorrow. Online checking variable, probably cybercafe-assisted (because I doubt I can go three days without checking email). Back Sunday.

My Triumph lasted till the Drums
My Triumph lasted till the Drums
Had left the Dead alone
And then I dropped my Victory
And chastened stole along
To where the finished Faces
Conclusion turned on me
And then I hated Glory
And wished myself were They.
What is to be is best descried
When it has also been—
Could Prospect taste of Retrospect
The tyrannies of Men
Were Tenderer—diviner
The Transitive toward.
A Bayonet's contrition
Is nothing to the Dead.
