The title, in case you're wondering, is from the section of Messiah that's playing at this precise instant.
Back on vampires. Go go vampires. Drain hero/heroine blood. Cruel evil vampires. Dark vampires. Horror vampires. (Cute little uke vampires will be executed by firing squad, or, worse, forced to star in the American dub of Card Captor Sakura.)
Where _does_ Sanzo get his newspaper from? He manages to find a copy to read in the middle of the desert while hiding out in a cave from pursuing centipede-descended youkai animated by mahjong tiles. (Speaking of which, that is a neat gimmick -- the mahjong tiles, that is -- which I must remember for future use.)
Does being a writer involve this automatic plagiaristic view, looking at everything with an eye to borrowing or stealing or reshaping? Possibly. At least I seem able to remember what I've borrowed from where, and to file off the serial numbers accordingly. Perhaps one of the most useful things is to be able to identify the _result_ which one admires or enjoys, and then work back from there to produce it from different causes. Thus, one reads a section and appreciates the feeling of uncertainty caused by it, and the precise nature of that anticipation/fear/desire/interest, then attempts to analyse how the original author causes it, and then goes back and remakes it with a different set of characters, a different situation, and a different set of actions.
