I am very nervous when I install something new on my computer. I don't think it's just tech-phobia. It may just be the case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing, so that I have half an idea of what I'm doing, and far too good an idea of everything that could go wrong.

(It was RealOne Player. Seems to be working fine so far. Fingers crossed.)

The singer is either chanting "Die die die die die die die" or "Da da da da da da da". Hm. It's something by a chap called Endo Masaaki called Boku Tou Sengen! Daigunder. Not unpleasant, anyhow.

Minamicon in three weeks. I am looking forward to it a lot. I hope not to be disappointed. The fact that it's actually in my hometown makes things so much easier. Hm. Should probably go through my doujinshi collection, such as it is, and see if I can bear to get rid of a few of my less dearly-loved buys. (Ebay doesn't always provide that good a description of contents, and there have been a few disappointments from the more commercial sellers.) Amusing -- looking at some photos of last year's convention, and the cosplayers there, they had a Yaone present. Not that I was a Saiyuki fan at the time, or had any idea of whom she was, or that they were showing any of the series, but . . . if only, if only. ;) Maybe she'll be there this year too. Maybe they'll have some Saiyuki episodes. Twould be cool.

Obsessive here, yes, you all knew that, you may now all return to your regularly scheduled enthusiasms. These things all go in degrees. :)

(Mm. Package expected from http://www.archonia.com/ any day now. 2nd volume of Hikaru No Go, first of Lady Oscar, Megatokyo, and several other interesting-sounding goodies. Mm. Mm, say I. Mm.)

Absolutely justified

Especially for stuff like RealOne Player, which digs its fingers into all sorts of corners. You never can know ahead of time quite what an installer is programmed to do, and can do lots of nasty things. I'm not a technophobe -- I built my own computer, hand-tweak Registry and other configuration files, etc. Even I get nervous that an installer is going screw things up that'll take me hours of low-level tweaking to fix.

The wonders of google.

Check out this link regarding System Cruft. I think you will find it most informative. Possibly amusing too. As for the Cruft Force Factor on my systems:

Avalanche (the computer running Mozilla from which I'm posting this) is at Cruft Force 1. Nominally it should be Cruft Force 2, since it's been patched a bunch, but it's Red Hat 8.0, and the patching system is working well.

Redcloud (the computer running X and the windowing system I'm actually typing on) is at Cruft Force 3.5. It's perfectly useable, but it's running an old version of linux, and I have my suspicions about the stability of the virtual memory system. It doesn't crash unless I run a batch of apps, but I can get it to reliably crash X without too much work. Still hasn't blown out the kernel yet, though, and the current uptime is, oh, 119 days, which is decent. Unfortunately, this version of Mandrake Linux is no longer supported, and I'm a little worried about sendmail and some of the other subsystems. I've had to recompile bind a few times to deal with security holes, for example. It also has a second boot partition with Win98 on it, but these days I don't really use it.

The laptop is at Cruft force 6-7. It's got bad registry info, tries to load VxDs that don't exist at boot up, and will freeze solid if you attempt to adjust the system clock. (When Daylight Savings rolls around, it'll be time to boot in Safe Mode to get through that, which doesn't seem to have the same problems.) Sleep mode no longer works, the hard drive sounds 3 times louder than it should, and the whole thing no longer shuts down properly. About half the time on boot it'll fail to load ZoneAlarm, and need to be rebooted. Not good. I need to wipe it and reload the OS.

It's worth noting I've never seen a UNIX machine past Cruft Force 5 or so. Even the really old ones that are 'limping' along, say an HP-UX 9 box past Y2000, still function just fine. Mostly this just shows how badly Windows sucks.
