Dentist tomorrow, and as such, I recite the familiar mantra of "please please please don't let me need any new fillings". I wonder if one could argue that just as there are no atheists in foxholes, neither are there any in dentists' chairs? (I know I haven't needed any for a couple of years. That makes no difference to anything at all.)

In the middle of translating a chunk of Scales, about magical beings, with rough notes on personalities and suggested powers. I will merely note that lamias get more fun than unicorns, and that the proximity of one to the other is because the French for unicorn is "licorne".

And further, as I was originally only being slightly bemused to find myself quoted...

Yes. Good luck with the dentist tomorrow; my thoughts will be with you.

Amusingly, the French ("licorne") looks like it's a borrow from Italian, although as I don't actually know either language I can't be sure. (Having now looked it up, Italian "unicorn" is, predictably, unicorno - but "horn" is corno.)

Then you were *not* brought up with a copy of Verse and Worse handy on the shelf as I feared you were. 'Can a Mother's tender care/ Cease towards the child she-bear.' Misheard hymns, as eg Gladly the cross-eye'd bear. Mondegreens, but early ones.

At least when it was described in one of the Beverly Cleary books I realized I wasn't the only child who heard "by the dawnser's lee light" in "The Star Spangled Banner" and wondered what a dawnser was. Just like the character in the book, I figured a "dawnser" was some sort of huge lamp and lee meant "very bright".

Good luck with the dentist. I get to go play play with an odontist on Friday because of either a perferation (unlikely) or unusual tooth anatomy.
